About Nyaya Pathshala
Who we are, what we are trying to do, and who started it.
Nyaya Pathshala (न्याय पाठशाला, “the school of justice”) is a free, independent legal-awareness platform for India.
We publish plain-language guides to the rights the law already gives every citizen: what to do when the police refuse an FIR, how bail works, how to file an RTI, how to get your deposit or salary back, and much more. Everything is free, in English and Hindi, and written to be read on a phone.
Alongside the articles we build practical tools: a “What happened?” rights finder, ready-to-send letters and legal notices, and a judgment of the week explained in plain words.
How we work
- Accuracy first. Every section number, deadline and helpline is checked against the bare Act, official notifications or court records before it is published. Articles show when they were last reviewed.
- Current law. We use the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, and the new Labour Codes, with the old section numbers in brackets where they help.
- Information, not advice. We explain the law in general terms. For your own case, consult an advocate or call free legal aid at 15100.
- Open to contributors. Students, teachers, advocates and citizens write for our Guest Column, and law students can join as Campus Ambassadors.
- Independent. No advertising, no paid placements, no data selling.

Our mission
न्याय before क़ानून
Qanoon is the rule. Nyaya is the reason the rule exists. This project begins from the belief that the second must be taught before the first.
I teach law. Every semester I watch bright students master sections, tests and precedents, and I worry that we rarely stop to ask whether the outcome is just. Law is a tool. Justice is its purpose. A law school that teaches the rule and forgets the reason produces technicians, not guardians.
Nyaya Pathshala is my attempt to put justice back at the centre: for ordinary citizens, who deserve to understand the rights the law already gives them, and for the classroom, where the next generation of lawyers is formed. Every guide here is written in plain words, because justice that cannot be understood cannot be claimed.
Shashank Shekhar, Founder
Justice above law
Every article explains not only what the rule is, but what it protects and why it matters.
Plain words
No jargon. If a citizen cannot read it on a phone at a police station, we rewrite it.
Classroom to community
Lessons tested with students, advocates, prosecutors and police officers, then shared with everyone.
